BOSTON — George S. McGovern, the Democrat who lost 49 states in the 1972 presidential election, may run again for the White House in 1992, the former senator said in an interview published today. McGovern, 68, said in the interview with the Boston Herald that he will decide within 90 days whether to launch a new campaign.
“I think it’s possibly a doable campaign. The last two years I’ve had more people in more states talk to me about running again,” said the ex-South Dakota senator, who lost every state but Massachusetts to incumbent Richard M. Nixon in 1972.
McGovern, who ran on an anti-Vietnam War platform in 1972, said he does not think war will be the main issue in 1992.
“I think it’s going to be these people-oriented economic factors that will be decisive in 1992,” he said.
