A Head Start

Though I’ve enjoyed Rob Reiner’s films, upon reading Sean Mitchell’s Nov. 25 article my estimation of the director dropped significantly. His remark “cream rises to the top” sounded like hubris as well as a myopic denial of Hollywood nepotism.
It’s fine he has a strong, healthy belief in himself, but a little humility never hurts.
Unlike Scorsese, Soderbergh and countless other, more brilliant directors, Mr. Reiner didn’t obtain the backing of someone like Norman Lear purely on merit. Having Carl Reiner for a dad gave him quite a head start.
It’s true, cream does rise, but as Reiner started out at the top of the bottle, what experience has he had with that concept--unless he’s talking about the sort of cream whipped with hot air?
