Students Stage 2nd Walkout for Teachers

Several hundred students at three Torrance high schools walked out of their classes Tuesday morning in what they described as a show of support for their teachers, who have been working since June without contracts. It was the second time in five days that students in the Torrance Unified School District have demonstrated in support of teachers.
Students at North, South and Torrance high schools left classes late Tuesday morning, and most returned to classrooms without serious incident, Torrance police said. Students at West High School began the protest Friday.
Students said their teachers deserve higher salaries. “Most of us are out here to see that our teachers get what they deserve,” said Jarrod Soules, 16, a North High School sophomore.
School administrators said the protest was done for the benefit of the media. The superintendent’s office declined to return telephone calls.
