Bush Doing Good Job, McNamara Asserts

NEW YORK — Former Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara said President Bush and his top military advisers are doing a superb job of managing the Gulf War.
But he told Time magazine, in an interview released Sunday, that even “Jesus Christ himself can’t keep one of these things under control.”
The magazine, in its Feb. 11 issue, also asked the former aide to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson to compare the Vietnam War to the Gulf War.
McNamara replied: “The situations are not analogous, except in one sense: The consequences of military action are unpredictable.”
He said the United States did not anticipate how many casualties it would suffer in the Vietnam War.
“No military operation can be totally under control, especially one with high-tech weapons,” he said.
