In one of the unlikeliest doubles combinations in years, John McEnroe and Andre Agassi played together in the Volvo/San Francisco tournament Monday night.
McEnroe and Agassi, who were not seeded, lost to fourth-seeded Neil Broad and Kevin Curren, 1-6, 7-6 (7-2), 7-5. Agassi, who was 1-1 in doubles matches last year, is ranked No. 524 in doubles; McEnroe, who was 2-3 in 1990, is ranked No. 343.
In first-round singles, fifth-seeded Tim Mayotte, trying to make a comeback under the coaching of Billie Jean King, defeated Tomas Carbonell, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6).
Mayotte used an overhauled serve and sharp volleys to beat the Spaniard. But it took him three match points to win the second-set tiebreaker.
“I was pleased with the match,” said Mayotte, who didn’t win a tournament last year for the first time since 1984. “Billy Jean King and I have been making technical changes in my game for 2 1/2 months. They are drastic changes for me. At 30, it’s pretty tough.”
Sixth-seeded Aaron Krickstein breezed past Amos Mansdorf of Israel, 6-0, 6-1, on the opening day of an ATP tournament at Milan, Italy.
In other first-round matches, Niklas Kulti of Sweden defeated seventh-seeded Marc Rosset of Switzerland, 6-3, 6-4, and Jacob Hlasek of Switzerland defeated Todd Witsken, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.
