A Raise and a Decline by the Postal Service

In the past, whenever I’ve received a raise, my family and friends would congratulate me. I think that this week, whenever we see a mail carrier, we should congratulate him or her on their raise.

The last postage stamp increase (from 22 to 25 cents) and now the current increase (from 25 to 29 cents) is primarily going to pay for labor costs. Each time the price of a stamp goes up, however, the service gets worse.

Are these people really worth their already outrageously high salary and benefits? Many people with MBAs don’t even earn this kind of salary and yet post office employees, many of whom only graduated high school, are earning very healthy five-figure incomes.

Whenever I visit the post office, they act as if they’re doing me a favor by selling me a stamp. It takes longer for a letter to go across town than it did when stamps were just a nickel each.

Moreover, the post office is threatening to curtail service (or at least their definition of service) even more in the months ahead.

So, congratulations, mail carriers, and I hope you like the raise that we taxpayers are being forced to give you!
