A dentist leaving work for the day was shot and critically wounded when he resisted two gunmen out to rob him and a colleague outside an Inglewood medical complex where they worked, police said Friday.
Dr. Chester W. Kaufman, 46, of Long Beach was walking to his car with another dentist about 6:45 p.m. Thursday when two men with handguns confronted them in the parking lot and demanded money. Kaufman’s colleague, Dr. James M. Jones, 30, of Long Beach, complied, but Kaufman resisted. A scuffle ensued and one of the gunmen shot Kaufman in the face. The bullet broke the doctor’s jaw and lodged in his mouth, Lt. David Garza said.
Kaufman was in guarded condition at UCLA Medical Center awaiting surgery to remove the bullet late Thursday.
