TOKYO — Prices surged today for the sixth consecutive session on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The dollar closed lower against the Japanese yen.
The Nikkei Stock Average of 225 selected issues rose 638.93 points, or 2.63%, closing at 24,935.01. The index gained 191.65 points last Friday.
Japan’s markets were closed Monday for a national holiday.
Volume on the stock market’s first section totaled 1 billion shares, up from Friday’s 700 million shares.
After rising 777.72 points in the morning session, the Nikkei index shed some of its early gains on profit taking in the afternoon, stock dealers said.
Analysts said the Nikkei index rose in response to the sharp 71.54-point gain Monday in the Dow Jones Industrial Average on the New York Stock Exchange.
