While many African countries are not involved in the Gulf War, three of the continent’s most impoverished states have joined the allies on the front line:
Sierra Leone’s 130-member Gulf contingent, including 30 medical personnel, spent a month waiting in the capital of Freetown until the government could gather sufficient funds to send them.
Senegal’s 500-strong force has been guarding holy sites in Saudi Arabia and plans to join any ground attack.
Niger has contributed 500 soldiers. President Ali Seibou is the only leader from the three countries to have visited his troops in the field.
