NATION : Patriot Critics Wrong, Bush Says

ANDOVER, Mass. — President Bush today visited the plant where the Patriot missile system is produced and said improved missile defenses will be needed as more nations obtain chemical and nuclear weapons.
In a speech to workers at Raytheon Co.’s Patriot production plant, Bush said the Persian Gulf War has proved critics of the radar-guided defensive missile wrong.
“Critics said this system was plagued with problems--that results from the test range wouldn’t stand up under battlefield conditions,” Bush told the Raytheon workers. “You knew the critics were wrong all along, and now the world knows it too.”
The Patriot has knocked down dozens of Scud missiles Iraq has fired at Saudi Arabia and Israel in the last month.
