“Should Saddam Hussein stand trial? No, for sound political reasons. A weakened Saddam at the head of a functioning and unitary Iraq might be preferable to a martyred Saddam uniting discontented Arab elements everywhere. Is there a moral imperative to try him? Moral imperatives require consistent application. What message would we send by trying Saddam for crimes where Western forces were involved, but ignoring (indeed supporting) his aggression when opposing forces were non-Western? Hypocrisy is a shaky foundation upon which to build a new world order.”
