Cypress Upsets Ventura in Regional Final

VENTURA — Sam Sabbara and Brian Kenney each hit free throws in the final six seconds to give Cypress a 70-68 victory over Ventura in the final round of the Southern California Regional men’s basketball playoffs Saturday night.
Cypress (25-10) advances to the state tournament Thursday through Saturday at UC Irvine. Cypress was the 10th seeded team in Southern California and Ventura (30-5) was No. 2.
“We played intense defense,” Cypress Coach Don Johnson said. “Everything is so emotional right now . . . the game is just a big blur to me except for our defense.”
Eric Pauley scored a team-high 16 points and Charles Lockard had 14 for Cypress.
