Jose Luis Noriega provided the only victory for University of San Diego as ninth-ranked Arizona State scored a 5-1 men’s tennis victory in the Penn Collegiate Invitational.
Noriega scored a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Brian Gyetko in No. 1 singles. USD (3-10) is ranked 25th in the Volvo-IPCA Collegiate Rankings.
Nevada Las Vegas defeated UC San Diego, 8-1, in a nonconference match. The lone UCSD (0-5) victory came at No. 3 doubles with Carter Hedrick and Mike Rintala beating David Hostalek and Mike Bastin, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).
BASEBALL
U.S. International (5-17) left 15 runners on base and fell to visiting UC Santa Barbara, 10-4, in a nonconference game. Pitcher David Payetta (0-1) got the loss. UCSB 14-6.
Eight San Diego State pitchers walked 12 batters, but the decisive blow was a two-out, bases-loaded double in the ninth against Mark Gapsky that gave UC Irvine (11-12) a 12-9 nonconference win.
Greg Quam had three hits. His two-run single in the fifth gave SDSU (12-7) a 9-8 lead. Scott Dennis also had three hits and had three RBIs.
