School Officials Warned of Growing Budget Woes

Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education officials, fresh from having cut $88 million from this school year’s budget, heard more bad news Thursday.
At a special budget session, they were told by staff to expect a 1991-92 school year shortfall of between $287 million and $317 million. The new figures, significantly larger than the earlier shortfall estimates of $200 million to $250 million, are chiefly the result of the worsening state budget situation, said Pat Spencer, spokesman for the district, which had a 1990-91 budget of $3.96 billion. For example, state cost-of-living monies that were estimated to be $113 million will be around $100 million, and the staff estimated that income from the lottery will plunge from $112 million to $95 million.
In addition, a proposed new way of computing attendance could cost the district up to $32 million from the state.
