Playwright, Four O.C. Organizations Win NEA Grants

Four Orange County organizations and one individual have been awarded a total of $74,639 in the second round of 1991 National Endowment for the Arts grants.
The Pacific Symphony will be given $41,150 to support music director Carl St. Clair’s salary, in-school concerts and various activities; Laguna Art Museum will be given $12,500, its second NEA grant this year, for conservation of paintings; Pacific Writers Press, a UC Irvine-based publisher, will be given $6,789, its first NEA grant ever, to help publish three books by Southern California writers; Pacific Chorale will be given $4,200 to support artistic director/conductor John Alexander’s and singers salaries; and Roy Conboy of Garden Grove, will be given a $10,000 playwrights fellowship, his first NEA grant.
“I’ll use (the money) to help support myself while I’m writing,” said Conboy, who is working on a play based on the Mexican folk legend of El Cucui, “a Mexican bogey man.”
Conboy’s play “Happy Birthday, Angel” was commissioned by South Coast Repertory for its school touring program.
The NEA awarded a total of $26 million to 871 artists and arts organizations nationwide in this round. All awards are one-to-one matching grants.
The Laguna Art Museum previously won $10,000 this year.
