Rome Prize Winner: Stephen Hartke, 38, composer-in-residence with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and a USC composition teacher, is one of 14 visual artists, musicians and architects announced today as winners of the American Academy in Rome competition. The Rome Prize, established in 1894 with Rockefeller and Morgan money, awards stipends that allow continuing artistic endeavors in Rome. Other winners from California include Teddy Cruz and Cameron McNall (architecture) and Hsing-Ming Fung (design).
