World IN BRIEF : GERMANY : Workers Offered Incentives to Go East

The German government announced new measures to improve conditions in economically depressed eastern Germany, including raising pensions 15% on July 1 and incentives for western German professionals to move there. Bonn said civil servants will be able to write off between 1,500 and 2,500 marks ($900 to $1,515) from their monthly taxes if they agree to work in eastern Germany. Meanwhile, the White House announced that President Bush will meet with Chancellor Helmut Kohl in Washington on May 20.
