Shamir Thanks God on Holocaust Day

JERUSALEM — Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir publicly thanked God on Wednesday for sparing Israel from another Holocaust when it faced Iraqi threats to destroy it during the Gulf War.
Shamir spoke at the opening ceremony of the annual Holocaust Memorial Day when Israel recalls the Nazi German extermination of 6 million Jews during World War II.
He drew comparisons between then-German leader Adolf Hitler and Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, who launched an estimated 40 Scud missiles at Israel during the Gulf War, killing two Israelis and wounding more than 200.
Israel began the 24-hour remembrance day at sundown Wednesday.
