The Laguna Beach City Council has voted 3-2 to approve Tom Askman’s design for a sculpture to be installed in front of City Hall. Mayor Neil Fitzpatrick and council member Ann Christoph cast the opposing votes. Askman’s 12-foot-tall, conical fountain won a Laguna Beach Arts Commission competition last year. No completion date for the piece has been set, according to commission staff liaison Philip Hofmann, but it is expected to be in place for the September reopening of City Hall, which is being remodelled. Askman lives in Spokane, Wash.
