Salvation Army Store Robbed of $1,000

A man robbed about $1,000 from a Salvation Army Thrift Store in Canoga Park after threatening the store manager with a knife and spraying her face with tear gas, Los Angeles police said Sunday.

The thrift store had closed for the day when manager Gloria Kaminsky, 60, was surprised by a man brandishing a knife and demanding that she open up the store’s safe about 6:30 p.m. Saturday, police said.

Then he sprayed her face with tear gas, put the knife to her throat and began yelling threats, Officer Roger Ruggiero said.

After taking the money from the store safe, the man sprayed Kaminsky again and fled the store, which is in the 21300 block of Roscoe Boulevard near Canoga Avenue.

Police believe that the suspect had entered the store before it closed at 6 p.m. and hid until Kaminsky was alone, Ruggiero said.

The robber, who was wearing a ski mask, was described as a black male about age 25, Ruggiero said.

Kaminsky was treated at West Valley Hospital and released. “Her eyes were all flushed but other than that she was OK,” Ruggiero said.
