COUNTYWIDE : 3 to Be Honored for Mock Trial Work

A Ventura County judge and two teachers will be honored today for their work on the county’s mock trial competition for high school students.

The Ventura County Trial Lawyers Assn. and the Ventura County Bar Assn. will present Liberty Bell awards to Superior Court Judge Steven Z. Perren; Mary Ellen Mays, coach of the Thousand Oaks High School mock trial team, and Patrick Forrest, who coaches the team at Adolfo Camarillo High School in Camarillo.

The awards will be presented at a dinner meeting in Oxnard.

All three recipients have been involved in the annual mock trial competition since it began in Ventura County about 10 years ago. About 250 students from 14 Ventura County high schools competed in February. La Reina High School in Thousand Oaks emerged as the winner. Students played the roles of witnesses, attorneys and defendants, applying real legal principles to fictitious situations.

The awards dinner is one of several activities the two lawyer groups have sponsored this month in observance of Law Day, which was May 1. About 60 attorneys spoke to students at high schools and junior highs around the county. A “tag-along program” teamed students with lawyers, police officers or judges for a day to give them a look at the criminal justice system.
