The 50th California condor known to exist has hatched at the Los Angeles Zoo, officials announced Monday.
The chick, named Teneiya after an early Indian leader from the Yosemite Valley, emerged from its shell Saturday. The bird is the eighth condor hatched at the zoo this year and is the second offspring of its parents, Pismo and AC6.
All of the endangered giant birds live at the zoo or at the San Diego Wild Animal Park. Zoologists launched the California Condor Recovery Project to save the birds from extinction. If enough are hatched, some may be released into the wild later this year, said Michael Wallace, curator of birds at the zoo.
