California IN BRIEF : SANTA ANA : Arrest Order Issued for ‘Rainbow Man’

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

“Rainbow Man,” recognized nationally for his multicolored wig and his antics and banners at televised sporting events, is believed to be a serial smoke-bomber, police said. Authorities identified Rollen Fredrick Stewart, 46, of Downey as the man suspected of setting off smoke bombs at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, a Christian bookstore in that city, the Trinity Broadcasting Network studios in Tustin and the lobby of the Orange County Register newspaper in Santa Ana. An arrest warrant has been issued charging Stewart with four felony counts of placing explosive devices in public. Stewart could not be reached for comment. Police said Stewart is a wealthy evangelist with an entourage of followers who place “John 3:16” signs (“For God so loved the world. . . . “) at televised sports events around the country. “He claims he hates sports but he believes more people will see his banners and signs at a sporting event than any other,” said Santa Ana Police Lt. Robert Helton.
