Raty Beats Javelin Record by Nearly 17 Feet

Seppo Raty of Finland improved his own world javelin record by almost 17 feet Sunday with a throw of 318 feet 1 inch at a track and field meet in Punkalaidun in central Finland.
“The windy conditions helped,” Raty said. “There was a strong headwind, but I was disturbed by the rainy weather. I didn’t get a very good run-up.
“I can probably throw the ‘jav’ a few more meters with a perfect run-up, but it depends so much on the conditions.”
Raty, 29, set the previous world record of 301-9 in Shizuoka, Japan, May 6, taking the record from Steve Backley of Britain.
