A Ventura County sheriff’s deputy has been charged with felony spouse abuse for allegedly attacking his wife in March.
Kenneth T. Matye, 27, was arrested Friday and remains in Ventura County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail. A Sheriff’s Department spokesman said Matye has been placed on administrative leave and will receive full pay pending resolution of the case.
According to the complaint filed in Ventura County Municipal Court, Matye attacked his wife, Jennifer, on March 6 while armed with a knife. Deputy Dist. Atty. Mary C. Peace declined to provide details, other than to say that the victim did not receive any knife wounds.
On Wednesday, Matye’s attorney, Richard W. Hanawalt, asked Municipal Court Judge Kenneth W. Riley to release Matye on his promise to appear in court.
Peace opposed lowering the bail, saying she had evidence that Matye threatened the victim. Riley scheduled a hearing on the matter for 9 a.m. today.
Matye, 27, lives in Fillmore and has been with the department for two years, a department spokesman said.
