While reading Hiltzik’s fascinating profile of explorer Wilfred Thesiger, I was struck by the contention, I assume Hiltzik’s, that now “the sport (of hunting) is disreputable because of the decimation of African wildlife.”
Far from being in disrepute, the sport of hunting is one of the key elements in conserving the wildlife of Africa, as has been successfully demonstrated by such nations as Botswana and Zimbabwe. It is one valuable way in which wild animals can pay their way to ensure their survival.
