VENTURA : Schools Ban Gang Attire for Students
- Share via
The board of the Ventura Unified School District voted 4 to 1 Tuesday to toughen its dress code policy, adding a section that prohibits students from wearing gang-related clothing.
The policy prohibits any item or accessory, including jewelry and notebooks, or any “manner of grooming” that indicates gang membership.
The revised policy states that “any student wearing or carrying overt gang paraphernalia or making gestures that symbolize gang membership shall be referred to the principal or designees for appropriate disciplinary action.”
Principals at the schools will decide what form of discipline a student would face for violating the policy. Punishment could range from suspension to expulsion for repeat offenses, school officials said. Board President Vincent Ruiz voted against the policy.
