Mark Magdaleno will join the baseball coaching staff at Cal Lutheran as an assistant, ending his three-year tenure as the Santa Paula High coach.
Magdaleno, 31, steered the Cardinals this spring to their fifth playoff appearance in the past 50 years. Santa Paula (11-12-1, 7-5 in Frontier League play) lost in the first round to Sierra Vista.
At Cal Lutheran, Magdaleno will continue coaching his nephew, Dustin, an outfielder from Santa Paula who will be a CLU freshman in the fall.
Magdaleno, who had a high school coaching record of 40-45-1, is eager to join the staff of Rich Hill, who led Cal Lutheran to a school-record 32 wins in 1991.
“I believe in what (Hill is) doing out there,” Magdaleno said.
No successor has been named at Santa Paula.
