Power Plant Renovation Gets an OK

The proposed $150-million renovation of the Harbor Generating Station in Wilmington has been approved by the state Coastal Commission, officials said Wednesday.
The project, which now awaits building permits from the city of Los Angeles, is designed to modernize the power plant operated by the Department of Water and Power and bring its operation into compliance with new air emissions standards adopted by the South Coast Air Quality Management District.
The plant, the oldest of four operated by the DWP, was built nearly 60 years ago and includes nine generating units that produce power for a number of communities in south Los Angeles.
After the permits are approved, DWP officials hope to begin renovating the plant this summer and complete the project by the end of 1993.
