World IN BRIEF : BANGLADESH : Ershad Gets 10 Years for Illegal Weapons

Hussain Mohammed Ershad, deposed as Bangladesh’s dictatorial leader last December, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for possessing illegal weapons. “It’s not a fair trial. I shall go to the superior courts for justice,” Ershad, 61, said after Judge Muhammad Habibullah read the verdict. Ershad said weapons that police seized at his house were gifts from foreign governments--three pistols from Iraq, one handgun from Yemen and four shotguns from various dignitaries.
