Compton : Man Shot in Leg Trying to Escape Would-Be Car Thief

A 22-year-old man was shot Tuesday morning in the parking lot at Jefferson Elementary School in Compton by a would-be auto thief.
Francisco Marquez was in stable condition at Martin Luther King-Drew Medical Center with a bullet wound to the back of his left thigh.
According to investigators from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Marquez was unlocking the door of his car when a man walked up, stuck a gun in the victim’s face and demanded the car keys. Marquez tried to run but the gunman fired at him before jumping into a waiting car apparently driven by an accomplice.
According to school police chief Michael Nunez, Marquez was at the school for a graduation ceremony when the incident occurred. He had a relative among the graduates.
