Countywide : Way Clear for Cities to File Suit Over Fees
- Share via
Moorpark and Port Hueneme became the last two cities in Ventura County to formally join a suit over the county’s policy of charging for booking prisoners into jail and collecting property taxes.
Decisions by the two city councils this week clear the way for the 10 cities to file the suit against the county, Camarillo City Manager Bill Little said.
The suit questions the constitutionality of a state law passed last year that allows counties to charge the fees, Little said. Ventura County initiated the fees in September.
After county cities refused to pay the charges, the county withheld about $1.35 million from the property taxes collected this past spring.
