President Bush formally nominated Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, the commander of U.S. forces in the Persian Gulf War, for retirement in his current grade of four-star general, the Pentagon said. Schwarzkopf, commander of U.S. Central Command, which is responsible for U.S. operations in the Middle East, is scheduled to retire from the Army on Aug. 31.
