As part of its 75th anniversary celebration, the Ventura County Library Services Agency will hold tours of its bookmobile today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot of the Buenaventura mall.
A historical display of pictures will give the public a view of contributions the bookmobile has made to library services, spokeswoman Trish Cavanaugh said.
The public will be able to sign up for library cards while being entertained by clowns, face painters and a magician, Cavanaugh said. Free puppet shows are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m.
The history of the bookmobile in Ventura County dates back to 1924, when Elizabeth Topping, then county librarian, began the first mobile service by loading saddlebags on horseback and delivering books throughout the county.
In 1935, a truck and a sedan were bought for use as bookmobiles, Cavanaugh said.
