Lee Trepanier, the only coach in San Diego Section history to win a state basketball title, died in his sleep on Friday. He was 56.
Trepanier, long-time coach of the Point Loma High girls’ basketball team, had been battling cancer of the stomach and the asophagus for two years.
His teams won four consecutive state titles from 1984-87 and compiled a 335-51 record during his 14 years as coach.
After learning of his cancer during the summer of 1989, Trepanier, who also taught math, went ahead and coached during the 1989-90 season, then resigned at season’s end.
There will be no funeral services. Trepanier’s remains will be cremated and the ashes scattered at sea next week. A memorial service will be held at Point Loma High after classes commence in September.
