Safeway Settles Labeling Suit: The Oakland-based supermarket chain has settled one of two lawsuits accusing it of passing off lower-quality beef as “choice” in some San Francisco Bay Area stores. The firm, without admitting any wrongdoing, agreed to pay $150,000 to settle the civil suit brought by the Contra Costa County district attorney’s office, Deputy Dist. Atty. Curtis Hoffman said. Meanwhile, a class-action lawsuit filed by a Safeway customer also is close to settlement, according to the plaintiff’s lawyer.
