Guns N’ Old Glory

Neal Eastenson’s indignation over Axl Rose wearing an American flag shirt certainly qualifies him for a “Where Have You Been for the Last Five Months?” Award (Letters, Aug. 4).
Ever since Operation Desert Storm “proved” how proudly we hail our national colors, the Stars and Stripes has been exploited in newspaper, magazine and TV advertising, plugging everything from used cars to root canals.
One major department store’s ad featured saluting young women wearing swimsuits made to look like . . . you guessed it. Presumably it’s only a crime when a “sweaty, longhaired bozo” (Eastenson’s words) sports a flag motif. When a trio of waxed beauties stretch Old Glory over their buns, it’s patriotism .
