Cash Costs Less

When we have traveled, we have generally carried a supply of money in traveler’s checks. This has given us a sense of security. However, we recently found that it also has its disadvantages.
In Bulgaria and Romania, currency exchange is tightly controlled by the respective governments. Money can be exchanged only in specified authorized locations. In Bulgaria, those of our tour group who changed American currency for Bulgarian were charged 2 1/2%. Those of us who used traveler’s checks were charged approximately 24%. I would advise that anyone planning travel to those areas carry a supply of currency.
