Sellars Collects Prize: Director Peter Sellars took top prize of $22,500 for his updated production of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” at Opera Screen, the world’s first competition for televised opera held in Helsinki, Finland. The judges commented that Sellars’ inner-city reconception of the opera in its “invention and intensity . . . outweighed defects in production.” The supplementary Helsinki Prize of $15,000 for “a music theater program with outstanding conceptual qualities” was given to Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s “Die Soldaten,” filmed at Stuttgart Opera by a coalition of Euro-stations. More than 135 recent opera films were entered.
