SANTA PAULA : Council OKs Raises for City Employees

The Santa Paula City Council on Monday approved a cost-of-living pay increase for the city’s 99 employees.
The council voted 3 to 0, with Mayor John Melton and Councilman Wayne Johnson absent, to approve raises of 2% in October and 3% in April for the next two years. Bargaining units for administrative workers and Police Department employees proposed the increases, City Manager Arnold Dowdy said.
In July, the City Council approved a $9-million budget. It cut two positions from the Police Department--one sergeant and one cadet.
City officials said hard economic times have caused the budget to remain the same for the last five years.
