Nation IN BRIEF : UTAH : Hospital Gunman Hurts Self in Cell

A gunman who over the weekend killed a nurse and held nine people, including three newborns, hostage for 18 hours, was involved in a “weak” suicide attempt, officials said in Salt Lake City. Richard L. Worthington jumped backwards off a table and hit his head on the floor in his mental health unit cell in Salt Lake City, Sheriff’s Lt. David Bishop said. The wound required stitches. A close watch is being kept on Worthington, who, armed with two guns and dynamite attached to a detonator, entered a hospital seeking a doctor he harbored a grudge against. Officials said that Worthington’s wife had recently asked for a divorce. Worthington’s 16-year-old son, Aaron, meanwhile, was in critical condition in a Salt Lake City hospital with head injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident hours after his father’s arrest.
