Paul Henry Lang, 90, who helped shape the field of musicology through his writing and editing of Musical Quarterly for nearly 40 years. Lang’s “Music in Western Civilization” has become a standard text in the field since its publication in 1941 and is renowned for its melding of music, culture and history into a sweeping overview of separate eras. He also was a Handel biographer, taught for many years at Columbia University and was chief music critic of the old New York Herald Tribune from 1954 to 1965. In Lakeville, Conn., on Saturday.
