NOTEBOOK : Morris Watches Average Slip to .319

CINCINNATI — Reds first baseman Hal Morris went 0 for 4 to drop his National League-leading to .319, two points ahead of the Padres’ Tony Gwynn.

Gwynn, who had knee arthroscopic knee surgery Sept. 18, is taking batting practice but not expected to return this season because he can’t run. “He’s done,” Riddoch said Friday.

Gwynn (.3169) slipped to third in the batting race when Atlanta’s Terry Pendleton went two for five to raise his average to .3172. San Francisco’s Willie McGee went into Friday’s game with a .315 average.

Ex-Padre Stan Jefferson’s first-inning single was his first in 15 at-bats this season with Cincinnati. The ball grazed pitcher Greg Harris’ back, but didn’t hurt him. . . . Harris has allowed only seven earned runs in his last five starts, going 4-1.
