Tennis Event Draws Top College Men

Nine of the nation’s top 15 collegians will compete in the West Coast Fall men’s tennis championships that begin today at Warner Center Club in Woodland Hills.
The tournament begins with a qualifying round of 89 players, 16 of whom will advance to the main draw that begins Friday.
Brian MacPhie of USC, ranked No. 3 in the country by the International Tennis Coaches Assn., is the top-seeded player. Other ranked players include Jonathon Leach of USC, Mike Roberts of UC Irvine, David Kass of Michigan, Luis Ruette of Texas Christian, Vimal Patel of Stanford and David Decret of UC Santa Barbara.
In last year’s championship match, Mark Jeffrey of Mississippi State defeated Andras Lanyi of USC, 6-3, 6-4.
The host of the tournament, which benefits the Pacific Lodge Boy’s Home and Boy Scouts of America, is Pepperdine.
