Lifting Veil on Dead Sea Scrolls
Hurray for the Huntington Library! Too long have the Dead Sea Scrolls been hidden from view (“Library Lifts Veil on Dead Sea Scrolls,” front page, Sept. 22).
Maybe at the time they were discovered, before computers capable of encryption and translation programs were generally available, 40 years to translate a third of the texts would have been reasonable. Maybe. But even then, the jealous, obsessive control of access to the scrolls was not warranted. The more scholars there are who have access, the more likely it is we will get quick, accurate translations of these ancient texts.
