Eurocentrism strikes again! Alexander Cockburn (Column Left, Commentary, Oct. 18) implies that the form of the novel is 400 years old.
Actually, the first known fictional novel dates from the turn of the millennium and was written by a Japanese court lady--making that literary form about 1,000 years old.
