Oxnard’s Mix Eligible to Play Football but School Officials Still Studying Case

Running back Lloyd Mix of Oxnard High has been granted athletic eligibility provided he meets the academic eligibility standards set forth by the Southern Section and the Oxnard Union High School District, Southern Section Commissioner Stan Thomas said Wednesday.
Mix, however, will not play in the Channel League game tonight between Oxnard and Ventura, Oxnard Principal Rick Rezinas said.
“He has achieved the GPA he needed,” Rezinas said. “But there are some district policies involving academic procedures and we’re looking over that. There are some discussions we still need to have.”
Mix, a junior transfer from Santa Clara who rushed for 1,092 yards last year, has not played this season because he was academically ineligible when he enrolled at Oxnard this fall. Thomas said Oxnard provided the Southern Section with sufficient evidence that Mix had changed residences.
“He’s approved to play as far as our office is concerned, provided he is in compliance with Rule 205,” Thomas said. Southern Section Rule 205 mandates that varsity athletes maintain a minimum grade-point average of 2.0 in at least 20 units during the previous grading period.
Rezinas said Mix had met those standards during the school’s first six-week grading period. Rezinas, however, stopped short of granting Mix academic probation, which would clear the way for Mix to become eligible to play.
