La Puente : City to Buy GTE Building
The city will begin proceedings to buy the GTE building on the northeast corner of Main Street and Stimson Avenue as the site for a senior citizens center.
Community Development Director Rick Hartmann said the building, on a 30,240-square-foot lot, is “the perfect size” for such a facility.
At its meeting Tuesday, the City Council allocated $668,000 in community block grant funds to buy the property and rehabilitate the 11,800-square-foot building.
The property, which is being vacated by GTE, has been appraised at $580,000.
To obtain the necessary funding, the council agreed to discontinue a low-interest loan program that assists businesses in creating low- and moderate-income jobs.
