Man Killed by LAPD Officer Is Identified

Authorities on Monday identified a man who was killed by a Los Angeles policeman Friday after he allegedly pulled a replica handgun from his jacket as the officer was investigating a drug deal in the Westlake district Friday night.

Carlos Reyes, 25, died at County-USC Medical Center after the shooting, said Lt. Bill Hall of the Los Angeles Police Department’s officer-involved shooting investigative team. The shooting occurred after uniformed Metropolitan Division officers patrolling in the area stopped to investigate what they thought was a drug deal between two men about 8 p.m., Hall said.

Officer Peter Jones, 35, saw Reyes “reach into his jacket pocket and begin to remove a handgun,” Hall said. Jones, fearing that he was about to be shot, drew his 9-millimeter pistol and fired four rounds, police said. Police later discovered that Reyes was carrying a replica “resembling a small-caliber handgun,” Hall said. Reyes died in surgery about three hours later.
