SOUTHERN SECTION WATER POLO PLAYOFFS : Kenyon Scores Four as Marina Routs Mater Dei in First Round
- Share via
Marina, the fourth-seeded team in Division 3-A, scored early and often to defeat Mater Dei, 10-2, Wednesday in a first-round game at Golden West College.
John Kenyon scored four goals, including two in the first quarter, to give Marina (16-11), the Sunset League runner-up, a 4-0 lead.
After Kenyon scored his third goal one minute into the second quarter to make the score 5-0, the Monarchs tried to rally behind two-meter man Tom Broyles, who scored both Mater Dei goals.
Broyles scored his first goal on a back-hander from two meters with 4 minutes 28 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
One minute later, Broyles drew a major foul in the hole and was awarded a four-meter penalty shot, which he converted to pull Mater Dei to 5-2.
But the Monarchs never got closer. Marina’s defense, anchored by goalie Eric Goodwin who recorded nine saves, held Mater Dei scoreless for the final 2 1/2 quarters.
One play typified Mater Dei’s second-half frustrations.
With 2:58 remaining in the third quarter, Monarch goalie Jon Detterich made an initial stop of a Marina shot. But after Detterich retrieved the ball, Kenyon stripped it from him in front of the goal and scored to give Marina an 8-2 lead.
Matt Braun scored three goals for Marina, and Steve Andrusky had two. Marina plays in a second-round game Friday.
